Loving: Red Wing Boots
In a shoe world dominated by the likes of Nike and New Balance, Red Wing offer a welcomed change from the usual footwear norms. Founded at the turn of the 19th Century, the American brand specialises in the production of durable, high quality, well-crafted shoes that are designed to stand the test of time.
Perfect for what is probably forecast to be the harshest winter on record (as every winter has been since I can remember), their range includes a collection of archive re-works and re-styles, including Chukka Boots and Moc Boots, in both leather and suede, which can be worn with dark denim and flannel in order to achieve a vintage work wear look. For those of you who do favour a shoe best suited for running, and who are thinking I’m merely trying to make you look like a dad that shops at Next, you’re wrong; these boots are great and they’re here to stay.
Loathing: Topman
When brainstorming a few ideas about what to devote roughly 200 words of pure loathing to I was spoilt for choice. It only takes a brisk stroll down Market Street to identify at least 20 different sartorial disasters, all of which have a couple of key common variables. Firstly, the majority of those championing the awful clothes are Manchester locals, whilst secondly you can all but put your student loan on it that they probably got at least a third of their outfit from Topman; arguably one of the worst Menswear stores currently in existence on the high street.
Now don’t get me wrong, I won’t sit here and lie to you and pretend I’ve never shopped here in my life. In fact, ages 13 to 16 I’d be shopping at Topman thinking I was at the forefront of all things cool. But that’s exactly the problem; you only have to have a quick browse through their website to see that they’re still peddling the exact same terrible stuff they were 9 years ago, along with the addition of some poorly interpreted trends from the Autumn Winter catwalks. But that is, unfortunately, only the tip of the iceberg; let us not forget their favourite item of choice, the graphic tee, which will no doubt be on shelves come rain or shine for years to come.
